The past few years have been a wild ride for a lot of us. The word home took on a whole new meaning and it became even more important to have a place that feels safe and inviting. The living room is called the living room because that's where most of your living takes place (also lounging, binge watching Netflix, eating your candy stash after the kids go to bed, you get the picture). It's the heart of your home, where you gather with family and friends, relax after a long day, and create core memories. Here are some easy tips to help you create a space you can't wait to come home to every day.

Soften Your Lighting

Repeat after me. Turn the overhead lights off. Completely off. All the way off. And leave them there. Lighting is a crucial element of your living room's ambiance. The right lighting can help set the mood and make your space feel inviting. It's best to use soft lighting like Floor Lamps, Table Lamps, or even String Lights. For light bulbs, look for lower wattage bulbs that say soft white or warm white. You want to avoid light bulbs that are overly bright or have blue hues. I really like these GE Relax Dimmable Soft White light bulbs and use them in my own home.

Incorporate Warm Colors Into Your Home Decor

The color of your walls, furniture, and Home Decor can all impact your living room's vibe. Warm colors like rust, beige, dark green, mustard yellow, dark blue and warm shades of white can make your space feel cozy and welcoming. You can also add warm colors with throw pillows, blankets, and rugs.

Invest in Comfortable Furniture

When my husband and I were in college, he had a set of blow up furniture that was used regularly. I'm talking a full loveseat and chair. Although that might be hilarious and fun when you're young and in college, once you get to your late 20's you're going to want something that's a lot more comfortable so you can relax and unwind after a long day of working or chasing kids around. Invest in furniture that's soft and cozy and makes you want to curl up and never leave home again. I mean, at some point you WILL need to leave home again, but you want your furniture to make you feel like you could just stay there forever. A plush High End Sectional or Cozy Armchair are both great options. You also want to make sure you have a nice Coffee Table or side table to put your drinks and snacks and maybe an ottoman or footstool to put your feet up. Whatever you decide on, be sure to choose furniture that fits your space and doesn't overcrowd your living room.

Add Large Living Room Area Rugs

Large Living Room Area Rugs can transform a room instantly and are the perfect way to add character and visual appeal. I have area rugs in almost every room in my house. Whenever I feel like I'm getting bored with the design of a particular space, the area rug is usually the first thing I choose to swap out. The right area rug not only makes your living room look beautiful, it can also make your living room feel cozy and warm. They define different areas of your space and add texture and color. Just be sure to choose the right size. You can check out this recent blog post about choosing the right size for your space and how to properly arrange your furniture on an area rug.

Create a Focal Point

I'm all about symmetry and balance. In design, photography, life, pretty much everything. Creating a focal point in your living room brings your space together and makes it feel inviting. It tells your brain to come sit down and stay awhile and puts your mind at ease. Or maybe it's just my neurodivergent brain that can't feel peace unless things are visually aligned. Either way, it's good for your soul and you should try it! You can create a focal point with a fireplace, large piece of artwork, windows, lighting or even a statement piece of furniture. Arrange your furniture around your focal point to create a cohesive, cozy and inviting space.

Add Natural Elements

There's something about natural elements that bring so much peace and tranquility to a space. Incorporating things like a wood coffee table, indoor plants, stone vases, a small water fountain, a wood feature wall, and candles will all help create a soothing and relaxing environment. Not to mention the plants will help purify your air so you can breathe easier too!

Keep it Simple

My final tip is to keep things simple. Simplicity is key when it comes to creating a cozy living room. Keep your decor and furniture simple and streamlined. Don't overcomplicate your space with too many patterns or colors. It's also important to keep things tidy and uncluttered. Clutter can make your living room feel chaotic and stressful. Keep your living room organized by storing items in baskets or cabinets. Add decorative storage solutions like shelves or bookcases to keep your space tidy and organized.

A cozy living room (and entire home for that matter!) is a lot easier than you think. I hope these ideas were helpful!
